Evalina felt a shiver. ‘What’s Hugo up to now? Why would he suddenly want to invest in Walden’s company?‘
A few minutes ago, Jasper and Hugo were heading out. Jasper looked at Hugo and said, “You know what’s weird? Evalina becoming Walden’s secretary. I thought she’d be all settled as Mrs. Hayes and wouldn’t want to work again.”
Hugo furrowed his brow. “Yeah, send me Walden’s info again later.”
Jasper smirked. “What’s the deal? You into Walden now ‘cause of Evalina?”
Hugo turned to him. “Evalina just shows up as his secretary. What’s her game? What if she’s got some dirt on the Hayes family and is using it to get ahead?”
Jasper laughed. “Come on, it’s just a secretary job. And seriously, you think that bad of Evalina now?”
“This girl’s all about the money now. She’d do anything. But what does she know? A CEO’s secretary has a lot on their plate. She’s clueless. No way she’s got what it takes.” Hugo’s eyes got a cold look.
And then he came up with an idea and grinned. “Have someone call Walden and tell him we might invest in his company.”
Jasper was shocked, wondering what Hugo was getting at.
“To really get a handle on Evalina, we gotta be on the same team. Then I’ll know what she’s up to,” Hugo smiled.
Jasper thought it seemed like a lot of effort just for Evalina.
But Hugo’s eyes narrowed. “Evalina thinks being a secretary will let her off the hook? Hmph. She ain’t getting away from me. And she won’t last long as a secretary.”
“Dude, Hugo, you’re actually taking this personally?” Jasper said.
Hugo gave him a sharp look, and Jasper quickly shut up.
Walden’s face showed a flicker of surprise. He looked over at Evalina.
Evalina hesitated, then managed a smile. “This is a huge opportunity, Walden. Hugo’s investment could really take the company to the next level.”
She’d never dream of holding Walden back. He’d built this company from the ground up, starting with next to nothing—it hadn’t been easy.
Walden scratched his head. “But maybe he’s investing because of you.”
Evalina knew the score. Hugo probably saw her working here and was looking to get back at her. He was the type to hold a grudge and wouldn’t let a chance like this slip away.
But Walden was way off base. Walden likely thought Hugo was into this for some connection to Fate. Evalina was super thankful she’d kept the details about Fate under wraps. If she hadn’t, she’d be left with no leverage at all.
“Look, as long as we don’t spill the beans, he’ll never figure out I’m behind the drawing,” Evalina said, leaning back in her chair. “Walden, you know what they say–no risk, no reward. With his money, I can create even better work and bring in more cash. It’s a win–win for me. I’ll just need to play
it smart.”
Walden nodded slowly. “Don’t worry about it. I’ve got your back. Your secret’s safe with me.”
