Chapter 39
Walden soon got out for some paper and only Hugo and Evalina were at the office. Hugo’s throat kinda hitched as he leaned in closer to Evalina.
Her eyes went wide and she quickly put her hands on his chest. “Hugo!” she said.
But he grabbed her wrists real quick, holding both with one hand and shoving her back against the glass door.
“What are you doing? Let me go!” she stammered.
“Starting now, you’re outta Walden’s company. And you ain’t never seeing him again,” he said, his voice slow and close to her ear.
Evalina was all taken aback. ‘Is he seriously thinking I have a thing with Walden? That’s just plain silly. We’re about to call it quits, and he’s the one who’s stepped out first. What makes him think he could do this to me?‘
“Hugo, where I work is my call,” she shot back.
“Working or just flirting with some guy at the office?” Hugo looked down at Evalina’s stubborn face, his voice all angry–like.
“You’re the one with the dirty thoughts. You cheated and took it too far. You think everyone else does that too?” she snapped.
“You… Evalina,” he sputtered.
“Well, well, speechless now?” she taunted.
Just then, they heard some noises from outside–Walden was coming back.
“Let me go!” Evalina demanded, her voice getting louder.
Hugo’s voice got even lower as he felt Evalina’s body tense up in his arms, his lips almost touching her ear. Evalina shivered a bit. She looked up at him, so mad at the guy who was messing with her like this.
“I’m asking you again, are you leaving or not?” Hugo threatened in a low voice.
“I’m not.” Evalina had been giving in for three years, and she wasn’t about to give in even once more.
“Mr. Hayes is still waiting; hurry up and bring it in,” Walden’s voice was right outside.
Evalina’s heart sank. ‘Oh no, Walden’s coming in… Does this mean I need to be honest with him now?‘
Suddenly, Hugo kissed her, biting her lips. Before Evalina could react, he was kissing her deeply, not caring that Walden was so close. He held her tight in his arms, and she couldn’t move.
Evalina was so mad, but with her mouth covered by his, she couldn’t say a word.
The door burst open, and Evalina’s eyes nearly popped out.
Walden’s voice rang out, right on cue. “Sorry for the wait, Mr. Hayes.”
Evalina felt like she was gonna choke, but at the last second, the tension in the room eased up. She stared, agape, as Hugo stood there, all cool and collected, taking the files from Walden.
“No prob. Since we’re starting this partnership today, I’m looking forward to working with y’all,” he said, his gaze flicking over to Evalina.
“Thanks for the trust, Mr. Hayes,” Walden smiled.
He then turned and finally noticed Evalina, looking all spaced out like she was daydreaming. “Hey, Evalina, you alright? You seem out of it. Feeling sick or something?”
Evalina could feel Hugo’s smirk from the side. She kept her head down, tugging at her slightly messy hair, and said, “Nah, just the AC’s a bit too strong, I guess.”
“Hmm, looks like Ms. O’Donnell’s not feeling her best,” Hugo commented.
Evalina gritted her teeth inside, but with Walden’s concerned eyes on her, she had to say, “I’m good, thanks for checking on me, Mr. Hayes.”

“Cool, if you’re good, then Mr. Clarke, how about I treat us to dinner tonight at the Savory Spoon to celebrate our new deal? Sounds good?”
