I sneered, “Matt, what gives you the right to bark orders here? If not for your constant interference, Emily could have been there for her father’s last moments, could have saved her mother!”
“You are the cause of their deaths! To think you dared use their grave for a cat–you’re beyond vile. A person like you should not exist!”
“I’d love to make you disappear for good!”
Enraged, Matt lunged at me, growling, “You think I’m just going to stand here and take this? I’ll kill you, you bastard!”
“Smack–Smack-” The sound of two crisp slaps filled the air.
It was Emily who had slapped him.
Stunned, Matt stood frozen.
“Why did you hit me, Emily? It was him spouting lies!”
“He wasn’t lying–he spoke nothing but the truth! It’s your fault. If not for you, my father would not have died with regrets, and my mother would be alive! You murderer, give me back my parents!”
She attacked Matt furiously as if trying to beat him to death on the spot.
Overwhelmed, Matt retorted bitterly, “How can you blame me? You were the one who wanted to drink. When Steve asked you to go to the hospital, you chose to stay, convinced he was lying! You can’t just shift the blame onto me–l won’t carry this burden!”
“You flirted with me, wanting to escalate things over drinks. How is that my fault? If you really cared about your parents, one phone call could have settled everything. Why drag out a fight with Steve over this? You’re despicable!”
He shoved Emily away, cursing as he stormed off into the night.
All their covert interactions ended up being nothing more than a sad joke.
Bitterly, I turned back inside, silently packing my bags.
After some time, Emily approached, her voice raspy and tentative, “Where are you going?”
“Mom and Dad always talked about seeing the ocean. I’m taking them there.”
“I could ask for some time off to join you…”
I replied coldly, “No, thanks.”
“Steve, I’m sorry. Can you forgive me?”
She tried to hug my arm, but I shook her off forcefully.
“It’s all my fault! I should never have kept seeing Matt. I promise, no more. After all these years together, I can’t bear to part ways with you!”
This was the first time she had ever humbled herself to me, but it was far too late.
I tossed the signed divorce papers at her.
“Sign these! From now on, we go our separate ways!”
“How can you be so heartless? If our parents could see us now, they surely wouldn’t want us to split…”
My simmering anger flared up again.
“Don’t you dare mention them! You’ve lost that right!”
As I finished packing and was about to leave, Emily fell to her knees, crying bitterly, “I should never have gotten close to Matt. I regret it deeply now. I admit Twas decentior–Thad an awall with him in colles
