I made sandwiches and brought them to Harry. He barely managed to eat a few before throwing up.
He insisted that Carl come home with me so I could get
proper rest.
My car was stopped at the community entrance by Tom. He had been at a dinner gathering that day and overheard gossip that Harry had cancer.
“Is that true?” he asked.
“Yes, thanks for your concern.” I replied. “But you don’t need to visit him unless you’re going there to mock him for being unable to beat you up anymore.”
“Sara…” He leaned against the car window, trying to find the right words. “I know you’re still angry with me, but when something this big happens, it’s always good to have one more person to help. Can you stop rejecting me like this? I promise I won’t bring up our past, I won’t put you in an awkward position.”
I glanced at Carl. “I don’t need your help.”
Carl understood and spoke up. “I’ll take good care of Sara. There’s no need for you to worry, sir.”

“And I’ve known him longer than I know you. He’s Harry’s friend, someone I trust. Harry feels at case with him looking after me.”
I walked toward Carl, who reached out his hand and nodded to Tom. “We’re leaving.”
Once in the car, Harry asked, “Who has bigger hands, mine or his?”
I was confused. “How would I know? You two can compare.”
Carl chuckled, “Harry’s jealous. He resents that you stopped holding his hand once you grew up.”
I was surprised.
He’d always complained that I was too clingy. The truth was, he just couldn’t say what he meant.
“Stop talking.” Harry grumbled, kicking Carl.
Carl grabbed Harry’s hand. “Let’s compete.”
We went home to pick up Bella and went to the photo studio to take a family portrait.
Two days later, Harry was on the operating table.

“Kiss Uncle Harry. We’ll wait for you outside,” I said.
Harry made a pinky promise to Bella. “I will come out just fine.”
The surgery was a success, but Harry still didn’t make it through the winter.
I was heartbroken. Bella couldn’t even remember what Harry looked like. When she grew up, all she would know about him was from the stories I told her.
