Chapter 13
Chapter 13
Dad arranged the funeral home for a decent
send–off.
Mom packed my belongings and wrapped me tightly in my coat.
Since my body couldn’t bend, they had to put me in the trunk.
On the drive back, they argued, blaming each other for letting me down.
In a moment of lost control and slippery roads,
Dad crashed into a tree.
All three were injured to different degrees, and the car began to smoke.

Instead of checking on my brother, they rushed
to the trunk.
“I’m sorry, Stella, it’s all my fault,” Mom whispered, holding me close.
Dad gently fixed my hair, tears streaming down
his face.
“Why, Stella? Why didn’t you give us a chance to make it up to you?”
Strangely, now that I’m gone, they seem to regret and love me.
My brother couldn’t stand it, opened the car door, holding his head wound.
He shouted, “You only care about her, she’s

dead! You almost killed me, too!”
When they ignored him, he stormed off in the opposite direction.
It took them a while to come to their senses and start searching for him.
Eventually, he texted them a threat.
“Send me thirty grand and I’ll come back.”
I watched him through my spirit, lounging in an internet cafe, boasting to street kids.
“See, my parents will beg to give me money. Now that she’s gone, they’ll treat me like a king.”
The kids nodded in admiration.

“Sol, you’re amazing!”
Meanwhile, in the funeral home, Mom wept as
she dressed me in new clothes.
It was the first new outfit she’d bought for me in years, and it was a burial gown.
She shook my old clothes, and a small
notebook fell out.
Panicking, I tried to grab it but passed right through.
It contained notes of everyone who had shown me kindness.
Following the notebook’s clues, my parents found the internet cafe manager.

To express gratitude, they handed him a large envelope.
The manager remained indifferent, counted the money, then sneered.
With a cold laugh, he threw the cash back in
their faces.
“Playing generous with strangers, yet you couldn’t be kind to her?”
