I lay in bed, staring vacantly at the drifting white clouds outside the window.
In fact, Selena and I were fraternal twins. But from the moment we were born, our treatments were drastically different.
Selena was immediately praised by the nurses for her beauty upon birth. Compared to her, I could only be described as ordinary.
Relatives always complimented Selena’s looks, and when it came to me, all they had left to say was that I was well–behaved. Selena’s beauty and charming words made everyone favor her. No matter if it was my parents or relatives preparing gifts, they always let Selena pick first,

and I could only have what she was left.
To improve my English grades, I begged my parents to enroll me in a training class, but they said they needed to send Selena to dance classes and didn’t have money left for my lessons.
I knew that changing my fate required hard work, so I studied diligently, asked teachers when I didn’t understand, and spent weekends in the library.
Later, I was admitted to Harvard University, and I thought my life would transform. But I was
wrong.
My parents tore up my admission letter in front of me, saying the family had no money and telling me not to have unrealistic dreams,

forcing me to go out and work..
Later, I found out that it was Selena who had suggested not letting me go to college.
O
She had cried to our parents, saying her college entrance exam results weren’t as good as mine and that relatives would mock her. She had also said that if I went to college far away, I would never care about them again.
The parents had been smug when they said this, thinking they were so clever.
I had been chilled to the bone, because l remembered that after they had torn up my admission letter, Selena had secretly come to comfort me, saying that once she started working, she would make money to let me go back to college.

I had believed her deeply and worked two jobs to earn money for her college tuition.
An ice pack was suddenly handed to me.
I realized that Charles had come in at some
point.
“I bought pork liver congee; get up and eat some,” Charles said, pulling me up.
I packed to my face with the ice while watching Charles stir the pork liver congee for me.
“It’s ready, it’s not hot anymore,” Charles said, handing me the spoon.
I drank the congee while Charles held the ice pack to my face.

I felt warmth for the first time in a long while.
I thought that Charles still cared about me.
I didn’t actually like the taste of pork liver, so I put it down after a few bites.
“What’s wrong?”
“I can’t eat anymore,” I shook my head.
I looked up at Charles, whose face was slightly troubled. After a moment of silence, he suddenly said, “Morita, Selena has liver cirrhosis and urgently needs a liver transplant. Your liver is a match with hers. Could you donate half of your liver to her?”
My head was buzzing.

For a moment, I didn’t know whether to question why he had privately arranged the match or to mock him for caring for Selena.
“It’s really something how you can beg so pathetically for Selena,” I got up to leave, but Charles had grabbed me.
“Don’t touch me,” I said, grabbing the food container and throwing it at Charles’s head. The sticky congee spilled down his face, making him look quite messy.
“Morita, Selena is your sister. Are you really going to stand by and let her die?”
“Save her? Who will care about my life then? Just because she’s going to die, does that mean I have to sacrifice myself?” By then, I calmed

down.
“That won’t happen. As long as I’m here, I will make sure you’re okay,” Charles had said firmly.
I sneered. “How can you guarantee that? Dr. Adams, don’t forget that everyone only has one liver. Even if I’m lucky enough not to die, won’t
it still affect me?”
Charles fell silent.
I shook off his hand.
“Even if I die, I won’t donate my liver to Selena. Don’t dream about it.”
