“I’m the one who asked him to come over. Is there a problem?” Mindy demanded.
Lionel gave her a helpless look. “Honey…”
“Miranda is not a child anymore. She has her own judgment and can make her own decisions. If she’s chosen to be with Paul, all we can do as parents is to observe and respect her choice.”
“Observe?”
“Yes. Since he’s our daughter’s boyfriend, don’t we have the responsibility to vet him properly? Who knows if he’s good or bad? What’s his character like, and whether he is a reliable man?” she replied nonchalantly.
Lionel was starting to come around to the idea, but calling Paul over so soon still felt a little… embarrassing.
Sensing his hesitation, Mindy cleared her throat. “Miranda, go tell Paul to come over. Ask him to apologize sincerely to your dad and admit his mistake. What you two did was wrong.”
Lionel’s expression softened. That was more like it!
Miranda nodded. “I’ll definitely give him a proper scolding and reflect on myself as well. Dad, do you think we should call him over?”
“Since that’s the case… fine. Go ahead and call him over. I want to see if he’s sincere and if he passes the test…”
Miranda agreed happily and dashed off.
Lionel scowled, annoyed. “Look at her! What kind of behavior is that?”

Paul was sitting on the couch in the living room when Miranda went over to look for him. The lights were off, and he was shrouded in darkness.
“Dr. Jefferson?” Miranda called out to him tentatively.
His figure stirred slightly within the darkness, as if he had suddenly separated from the shadows.
Miranda turned on the lights. “Why are you sitting in the dark? Why didn’t you turn on the lights?”
Paul raised his head to look at her, his eyes bloodshot. “Mimi, did I mess everything up?”
Miranda’s heart melted into a puddle at that moment. She walked over and ruffled his hair gently, as if comforting an injured puppy. “No, it just happened too suddenly. My dad couldn’t accept the fact right away, but he’s a lot better now. If you don’t believe me, come see for yourself.‘
“I can come over?”
“Yes, my dad made a delicious spread for dinner. He’s just waiting for you to come and eat it after work. How could you not show up?”
“Alright.” Paul stood up and stretched his stiff shoulders.
As they were leaving, he suddenly remembered something and turned back to pick up two gift bags. Miranda glanced at them, but she couldn’t tell what was inside. “What are those?”
He replied, “They’re gifts for your parents.”

When they entered her apartment, Paul changed into house slippers and walked toward the dining room. Lionel sat at the table with a cold expression while Mindy gave him a faint smile. She was the first to speak. “Come in, Paul. Have a seat.”
“Thank you, Mrs. Sutton,” he said.
However, he didn’t sit. Paul took a step back and lowered his head sincerely toward Lionel. “Mr. Sutton, I’m very sorry for not informing you about my relationship with Miranda sooner and for causing a misunderstanding.”
Lionel scoffed. “Hmph!”

Lionel crossed his arms and responded with another scoff.
Mindy gave him a kick under the table.
Meanwhile, Paul handed over one of the gift bags. “This is a gift I prepared for you. It’s a small token of my appreciation. Please accept it.”
A gift?
Lionel raised an eyebrow and glanced at the bag. He couldn’t make out what was inside, but his expression softened considerably.
“Well…” He took the bag casually and placed it by his feet. “Sit down and eat first.”
“Alright.” Paul let out a sigh of relief and handed the second gift bag to Mindy. “Mrs. Sutton, this is for you. I hope you like it.”
Mindy smiled, clearly pleased. “Oh? I get one too?”
She accepted the gift and invited Paul warmly, “Come, let’s eat before the food gets cold.”
