Chapter 1049
Chapter 1049
During the meal, Paul met Lionel’s gaze several times. He wasn’t sure how to describe it….
There was scrutiny, curiosity, and a faint trace of serious evaluation in his eyes. It was completely different from the way Lionel used to look at him before.
Paul remained composed–at least outwardly. While serving Miranda food, he also made sure to take care of Mindy and Lionel.
After failing to discern anything from Paul’s actions, Lionel eventually withdrew his gaze and focused on eating his meal. Lowering his head, he noticed two peeled shrimp on his plate. He glanced over at the small pile of shrimp shells in front of Paul.
This was the first time in his life that he ate shrimp peeled by someone else. It felt… strange, but also kind of nice.
As soon as the thought crossed his mind, Lionel’s body stiffened.
No way…
It was too early to say Paul was a nice person. There was still much to evaluate! Yes, much to evaluate about him!
After the meal, Paul took the initiative to clear the table and bring the dishes to the kitchen. Lionel didn’t stop him. Instead, he remarked out of courtesy, “Just leave the dishes, I’ll handle it. How could I let a guest wash the dishes?”
Paul corrected him immediately, “I’m not a guest. I wash the dishes regularly, so you can go and watch TV in the living room, Mr. Sutton.”
“Well… Alright then.” Lionel walked away, feeling pleased. The moment he sat down, he saw Mindy unwrapping her gift.
“What is it?” he asked, leaning over curiously.
Mindy took out a small velvet box, about the size of her palm. She opened it, and a pair of ruby earrings were nestled inside. They were as red as blood, glistening under the light and exuding a luminous glow.
“Wow, what a vivid color!” Lionel exclaimed.
Mindy picked them up and examined them carefully. The longer she looked at the earrings, the harder it was to suppress the smile on her lips. “Are these pigeon blood rubies?”
Even Miranda was surprised. “Really? Let me see.”
Mindy was puzzled. “You didn’t know?”
Miranda shook her head. “He mentioned preparing a gift, but he didn’t say what it was. Rubies of this quality must be expensive.” And there were even two of them.
The more Mindy looked at them, the more she liked them. Her trip to Elgerson wasn’t just for her studies at Luridge College, but she was also attending a film festival.
Although the movie adaptation of her work hadn’t been released yet, it had already been shortlisted for the Competition. As the original author and script consultant, she had been invited to walk on the red carpet.
She had prepared a bright red evening gown for the occasion. It was bold and striking, but she struggled to find suitable jewelry to match.

Mindy had casually mentioned it at dinner the night before something even Miranda might not have remembered. Yet, Paul had clearly taken note of her remark
These ruby earrings were a perfect match for her evening gown.
“Paul, you’re so thoughtful.” Mindy smiled and carefully put the earrings away.
Miranda could tell how much her mother appreciated and liked the gift. This made Lionel impatient and restless. He got up and headed to the dining room. “Let me see what he gave me…”
He picked up the forgotten gift bag by the dinner table and began unwrapping it as he returned to the living room.
“What’s this?” He pulled out a brown paper file, then rummaged through it to see if there was anything else he had missed. However, there wasn’t anything else. The gift bag contained nothing but the paper file.
Lionel was taken aback. Was Paul holding a grudge against him, or was this some kind of mistake?
Mindy guessed, “Could it be some rare thesis?”
Lionel was skeptical. “Do such things even exist?”
As he spoke, he opened the paper file. Finally, he pulled out a document that looked like a contract.
