Paul smirked. “Since you were thinking about something inappropriate, then… let’s be completely improper.” With that, he leaned down and kissed Miranda. Initially, he meant to give her a peck to tease her, but it turned out that he was the one who couldn’t stop when their lips touched.

“Alright, I’m coming!” she called back before turning to Paul. “My parents really liked the gifts. Thank you for being so thoughtful.”
“It’s all good as long as they like them. You should head back inside. Good night.”

Miranda turned and entered the apartment.
Lionel was muttering on the couch, “Mimi, you’re a lady. You should be more reserved, you know? Keep your dignity so that you won’t get taken advantage of.”
That night, Miranda had a good night’s sleep.
Paul also had a dreamless sleep.
The only exception was the couple in the guest bedroom.
Mindy complained, “Why are you tossing and turning? Are you flipping pancakes?”
Lionel simply sat up. “I can’t sleep.”

Mindy turned on the bedside lamp and sat up as well. She leaned against the headboard. “Is this because of Miranda and Paul?”
“Yes.”
“Talk to me. The way you act today…” She paused before continuing, “It’s not like your usual self.”
Lionel was typically gentle and refined. He had the demeanor of what could be described as reserved and scholarly.
“I can see that you have a good impression of Paul,” Mindy said. “It’s clear from your past interactions that you’re satisfied with him. So why were you so curt with him today
“If you’re upset that they hid their relationship from you, that’s understandable. But both Paul and Miranda had explained that they intended to tell you but were caught off guard when you ran into them. Normally, you would’ve been able to accept their omission. Why not this time?”
Lionel let out a long sigh, his shoulders slumping. “Of course I know that Paul is a great person and truly a man worth entrusting Miranda’s future to. Her being with him isn’t a loss at all. But I feel worried precisely because he’s too good and too perfect.”
Mindy retorted, “Are you saying… Paul is too good for our Mimi? Let me tell you, if that’s what you think, I swear I’ll beat you black and blue!” Mindy’s tone held a faint trace of anger by the end.
“How could I possibly think that?” Lionel quickly defended herself. “Our Mimi deserves the best man in the world. If anything, it’s the men who aren’t good enough for her and not the other way around!
“However, that’s how we think as her parents. Would others see it that way? What about Paul himself? And what about his family? Don’t forget, Miranda also had a six–year relationship with that guy…
“Right now, Paul doesn’t seem to mind, but what about in the future? What will his family and friends say or think? He has such excellent qualities, a respectable job, and a spotless romantic history. From society’s perspective and in the eyes of outsiders, Mimi would be seen as coming up short.”
