Lionel continued, “I have to give him a hard time, don’t I? need to show him the full authority and stature of Miranda’s parents.
“I have to make it clear that Mimi has people who cherish and support her, so he wouldn’t underestimate her worth. He will weigh his actions carefully before daring to mistreat her in any way.

Lionel’s mouth was quite dry after his long rant, and he licked his lips to moisten them. Then he turned to Mindy, only to see her staring straight at him.

Mindy continued, “Back then, why didn’t you show this attitude with Hans… uh… that guy?”
Lionel scoffed and rolled his eyes. “What was the point of putting on airs with him? He was always so arrogant. I wouldn’t even have had the chance to do that before he flipped the tables on me.”
Mindy sighed. “You’re just taking advantage of Paul after realizing that he truly cares about Mimi. He is respectful and considerate of us because he values her highly.”
“Well, of course!” Lionel lifted his chin proudly. “If he wants to marry our daughter, he has to pass all our tests. Only then will he treasure her properly. I’ve got to guard this gate well. We can’t let him pass so easily!”
However, Lionel’s bold declarations began to falter when Paul showed up the next morning with breakfast and offered to play chess with him.

The next second, Lionel said, “Is there more? Can I have another bowl?”
Paul was taken aback for a moment before replying quickly, “Yes, I’ll get you another bowl… Actually, let me bring the whole pot over. Mrs. Sutton can have some later too.”
After Lionel had his breakfast, Paul cleared the dishes. Coming out of the kitchen, he set up the chessboard and smiled as he called out to Lionel, who was admiring the flowers on the balcony, “Mr. Sutton, shall we play a few rounds?”
Lionel hesitated for about two seconds before agreeing, “I’m coming right away!”
It was honestly hard to refuse!

When Mindy came out of the bedroom, she found the two men sitting across the chessboard from each other. The sound of chess pieces hitting the board echoed loudly.
“I’m moving my bishop!”
“I’m going to move my rook. Checkmate!”
“I’ll counter with my knight.”
Miranda and Mindy exchanged a glance. They seemed to be getting along well.
When noon approached, Paul took charge of lunch. He prepared four dishes and a soup, all his specialties and Miranda’s favorite dishes. Even if Lionel tried to find fault with it, he couldn’t.
In the afternoon, Paul accompanied Lionel as they tended to the potted plants on the balcony. Miranda grew so sleepy watching them that she went to her room to take a nap, but the two were still crouching outside.
By the time she woke up, they had already moved on from discussing plant respiration to the principles of physics. They were chatting up a storm.
For dinner, Lionel took over the cooking. Paul showered him with so many compliments over the meal that it left him grinning widely from ear to ear.
That night, Mindy gave Lionel a solid kick when the couple was lying in bed.
Lionel was surprised, while Mindy sighed in exasperation. So this is how you put on airs?”
As expected, trusting a man was about as reliable as leaning on a broken stick!
Lionel’s body stiffened as the realization finally hit him. After a long silence, he finally managed to say, “Paul… he’s got some serious skills.”
