The day before we left, we went to a gift shop.

There was a set of silver rings inside.
They were simple, with the mountains carved on
them.

They were $66 together, about $33 each.
He wanted the cheap stuff?
“Maybe we should look at other things?” I said.
Jake looked mad.
“Is it my birthday or yours?”
…Okay, birthday boy gets it.
I paid for the rings.
It was snowing when we went outside.
Jake put a ring on my right hand, and put his on
his left.
He held my hand, and the rings touched.
He held my hand and walked in the snow.
“Jake,”
He stopped.
“Yeah?”
“Happy 18th birthday.”
He laughed.
“You can’t think of something better?”
I lowered my head.
